I knew the reliability of the beetle: the fans' brotherhood is made of the same wood. I'm currently hosted by the President of the VW in Nicaragua (www.clubvwnica.com) and his wife Norma, manager of Mdisan, a customs intermediary agent. Their kindness and generosity (which are known far beyond the borders of Nicaragua) compete with their joie-de-vivre and passion for the beetle. I rest and prepare the end of the trip from the comfort of their quinta in the suburbs of Managua. |

Visit of the canal of Panama |

Wahooo! That was really impressive. I even had the chance to navigate a ship through the doors of a lock. Right, it was only an a simulator but still it was fascinating. In other words, a visit to the museum is compulsory. Interesting too this expansion project. If you head to Central America, don't miss the canal! |

We are on the other side of the Darien gap at last! It has been difficult to find a good intermediary customs agent who knows the procedures for private vehicles but eventually after many meetings, we've found one who was more or less reliable.
With Adrienne and Engelbert who wanted to ship their volkswagen combi, we rented a 40feet container to put both vehicles adn hence split the costs.
Mission accomplished without any major trouble.. Apart on the other side; it's Panama! The cargo arrived on time on Saturday but we only had access to the container on Thursday due to Bank holidays… So we were at the port at 8'clock, impatient to get reunited with our repsective vehicles but we forgot to take into account the speed of the bank and the customs office (2 hours to print a paper; it wasn't deliberate but rather a pure show of lack of computer skills). The port operations close at 18.00 but as we had paid everything during the day, they had to finish the process… 19.30+20 minutes to open the container due to a missing tool and here we are, happily reunited with our cars. The adventure can go on! |
